Happy  Feet Is Recovering! New Zealand News Wayward Bird: If glad Feet survive the treatment to remove sand from his stomach, his ride back house is already organised. The penguin, which had made Peka Peka Beach on the Kapiti Coast his home, earlier being rushed to Wellington Zoo, is being offered a ride back to Antarctica with intrepid traveller Gareth Morgan. Glad Feet continues in a critical condition following a 2nd operation to clear sand from his system yesterday. Penguin spied for the first time Monday, after a resident Chris Wilton, swimming 4000 km from Antarctica. While the penguin appeared on a busy four days of eating sand and sticks causing his condition worsened. Last Friday, he became lethargic, and tries at times to spit of sand. Around noon, Te Papa and Conservation Department officials whisked him to the chiller zoo. Vet Science Director Lisa Clay has been estimated as 27 kg of dried birds, he stressed, suffering from heat stroke and is struggling to swallow - but still feisty and kicking the adequacy of a struggle, as he sedated. Penguins in the Antarctic eat ice when trying to cool down, and he was trying to do the same with sand, Te Papa terrestrial vertebrates curator Colin Miskelly said. On Fri night he underwent a four-hour operation to clear his airway. Yesterday morning he went under once again as vets tried to clear his stomach of sand. X-rays have shown there's still sand in the bird's stomach and he will need a 3rd operation. There had been concerns that if the penguin did recover he would have no way to get back house but Morgan has offered a free sea passage back to Antarctica for the bird. A berth has been offered to the penguin and its Department of Conservation minder.
