Ohsaa Wrestling: Thursday was pay day for 3 Garrettsville Garfield wrestlers and their coaches. On the 1st day of the 74th annual OHSAA state wrestling tournament, the G-Men went 3-for-3, and they are looking for more. The G-Men took their first-round winner in stride. There are more acts to be done. Garfield senior Josh Lawrence (145), freshman Aaron Yonker (152) and sophomore Kevin Stock (171) all chalked up preliminary wins at Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center. Our goal has been on Saturday night we expect to see Garrettsville Garfield on the (score) board, in the top 10,” G-Men coach Alan Harbert said. That’s what we are shooting for. This is why our kids act hard every day. Yonker was smiling but seemed unfazed by his 3-2; first-round wins over Tyler Yant of Delta in extra time. You’re supposed to go two-and-out, and I’m trying to prove them wrong,” said Yonker when asked about being a freshman and winning his 1st state bout. Next for Yonker is St. Clairsville senior and Coshocton District champion Dominic Prezzia (43-0). Also making his 1st state appearance is muscular sophomore Kevin Stock (171), who pinned Garrick Montgomery of Ashland Crestview in 3:00 the lights, people cheering it’s different than like any little wrestling tournament,” Stock said. “It was about a minute in when the butterflies began coming out, and I only started wrestling my own match.” Asked what his goal is for this tournament, Stock replied, “State finals. Phillips.” He said he revised his goals once he saw his tournament draw. Chris Phillips is a three-time state champion from perennial ability Monroeville. But 1st Stock will have to get past Jacob Bresciani (47-2) of Coshocton. We go to the Wadsworth Tournament, and we’re the only Division III team there,” coach Harbert said. “Nine of the 12 teams are Division I schools. We go to the Dies, which is a 40-some team tournament. We do not shy away. In my opinion a wrestler is a wrestler, no topic what division they are in. Garfield senior Josh Lawrence (145) had no problem with Jordan Wilson of New Lebanon Dixie, winning 10-3. Next up for Lawrence is one of the four top seeds, junior Kyle Burns of Milan Edison.Ohsaa Wrestling
