Today in history: Accused murderess craigslist commits suicide: A year ago, a former medical student - accused of murdering a woman he met through Craigslist in a hotel in Boston, and also due to face charges in Rhode Island for assaulting a stripper at a motel in Warwick - suicide in jail in Boston, where he was awaiting trial. Philip Mark off, 24, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to a statement from the Suffolk district attorney's office, and pronounced dead at about 10:15 a.m. "Mark off was alone in his cell, and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life," the statement says. Five years ago today: Doug White, anchor for Channel 10 since 1978 and a presence in Rhode Island broadcasting since 1972, dies at his home in Warwick. The white of 61 years had been struggling with cancer, and took sick leave from the station in September 2005 for treatment. "It's a very sad day in the newsroom," says White is co-anchor Patrice Wood, who runs 5:00 newscast of the station with an obituary for him. Twenty-five years old today: Pastor Armand V. Ventre, 54, pastor of Our Lady of Good Help Church in Burrillville is acquitted of a charge that he sexually abused a mentally disabled youth in the rectory and in a cottage on Lake Washington Gloucester. Two other charges, alleging that he sexually touched two other youths, one under 13, were dismissed the day before. "I have a hard time understanding it," the priest says as his year-long ordeal ends. "I'm sure it will leave scars."
